On May 28, 2025, Lukosi Primary School made history by hosting its first-ever Menstrual Hygiene Day, a milestone since its establishment in 1988. This transformative event was spearheaded by the Lukosi Alumni Association, the Mary Biketi Foundation, the school administration, local authorities, the local church, dedicated community health promoters, and the Board of Management for both Junior and Primary Schools.

With a shared commitment to supporting and empowering students, the event became a beacon of hope, fostering awareness, dignity, and holistic well-being for the entire school community.

The main objective of this initiative was to provide essential hygiene products to underprivileged students. Girls received sanitary pads, while boys were gifted supportive innerwear, ensuring dignity and comfort for all.

Miss Mary Biketi, the esteemed guest of honor, was welcomed with grandeur and heartfelt celebration. Pupils from the Scouts and Girl Guides, alongside the Salvation Army full band, led a spectacular parade, creating an atmosphere of pride and unity. Adding to the rich cultural diversity, her entourage represented Kenyan ethnic communities from across the nation, embodying the spirit of inclusivity and togetherness that defined the occasion.

Excitement surged through the crowd as the program officially commenced at 10:00 AM. Pupils, teachers, parents, and community members beamed with joy and anticipation, eager to be part of this historic moment. Guided by School Principal Irene Wanyama and Alumni Chairman Peter Gacheru, Miss Mary Biketi formally signed the guest book, marking her presence in the school’s legacy. She then participated in the symbolic planting of a tree within the school compound—a gesture of growth, resilience, and a future rooted in hope.

The special guest, Miss Mary Biketi, was ushered in with great ceremony, welcomed by pupils and the Salvation Army squad in a vibrant parade. Her entourage, representing diverse Kenyan ethnic communities, added to the event’s rich cultural fabric.

Excitement filled the air as the program officially began at 10:00 AM. Pupils, teachers, parents, and community members radiated joy and anticipation, eager to witness history in the making.

Among the 20 alumni present were Janet Makokha and Janet Kamau, who shared heartfelt gratitude to Madam Kai and Madam Mary for nurturing them as young girls decades ago. In appreciation, Janet Makokha gifted Madam Kai, while Janet Kamau honored Madam Mary. Both alumni, now esteemed medical professionals, encouraged the community, emphasizing that without the school’s support and God’s grace, their success wouldn’t have been possible.

Other alumni—now thriving in various professionsways, Kenya Power, KRA, and other corporate and government sectors —stood proudly, embodying the lasting impact of Lukosi Primary’s nurturing foundation.

Among the speakers was Mr. Hilary Opicho, an alumni medic from Embu, who passionately appealed to Miss Biketi:

“My sister, when teachers adopted one soul at a time, they created a lasting impact. We urge you to embrace this approach—for the betterment of both the girls and boys here today. We appeal that you adopt this school!”

Echoing the spirit of collective support, Chairman Peter Gacheru reflected on his tireless efforts in securing partnerships, revealing that out of over 50 applications, only Miss Biketi responded. He applauded her unwavering kindness and commitment to the school. He also recognized key alumni contributors, Calton Simiyu, Janet Makokha, and Hilary Opicho, for their dedication. As a token of appreciation, certificates of appreciation presented to Janet Makokha, Janet Kamau, Dickson Wanjala and Calton Simiyu.

In an inspiring moment, Miss Biketi invited pupils to voice their most urgent needs. The students passionately outlined their dreams, asking for:

• Improved classrooms
• Modern sanitation facilities
• A perimeter fence for safety
• Additional sports equipment
• A school bus

Moved by the pupils’ clarity and determination, Miss Biketi pledged to initiate the construction of the school gate, paving the way for subsequent development projects. She reaffirmed her commitment to working collaboratively with local authorities to ensure sustainable progress.

Upon learning that the Kimini Member of Parliament and the county government had already undertaken renovations for a few classrooms and were actively distributing sanitary pads, she sought to avoid any conflict of interest. Instead, she expressed her desire to focus on completing the remaining projects, ensuring that resources were directed where they were most needed for the betterment of the school community.

Further highlighting her generosity, Miss Biketi ensured all pupils would receive breakfast on May 29, reinforcing the importance of nourishment and well-being. In addition, Honorable Keter contributed Ksh. 20,000 to provide refreshments for all students, adding to the day’s joyous atmosphere.

The school administration brought to light a deep-rooted challenge—some girls, out of desperation, either share or sell their sanitary pads to support siblings or secure meals. This heartbreaking reality underscored the urgent need for continued intervention and awareness.

The historic event captured nationwide attention, with Citizen TV, KTN TV, and Mitume Radio of the Catholic Diocese of Kitale featuring the celebration during prime news hours at 7 PM and 9 PM. The widespread coverage highlighted the significance of the initiative, amplifying the message of empowerment and community-driven change.

As the day drew to a close, Chairman Peter Gacheru assured the Alumni team that within two weeks, a follow-up meeting would be convened to evaluate the impact and plan for future initiatives.

Lukosi Primary School’s first-ever Menstrual Hygiene Day was more than an event—it was a turning point. A moment of unity, compassion, and transformation that ignited hope in the hearts of pupils and the entire community. With strong alumni support and unwavering dedication from partners like the Mary Biketi Foundation, the future of Lukosi shines brighter than ever.
